Social Media And Gender

Internet based life And Gender As the internet based life and the related exercises are quickly creating, the quantity of included ladies clients are more than the quantity of men now. Because of this reality, there are numerous potential changes that could be experienced inside the future media. Promoting and media Companies have been said to utilize the equivalent and outdate types of belief system to comprehend their crowds. In any case, it turns out to be increasingly testing to continue utilizing these outdate designs. Because of the expanding pattern of internet based life utilization by ladies, web-based social networking, for example, papers, motion pictures, magazines, long range informal communication locales, would hugy affect the molding of social patterns.(Thompson 2011) It is important to break down a portion of the statements that are identified with the web based life and the part of sexual orientation when seeing the issue of online networking and how the sex impacts media. It is additionally important to investigate the part of ladies assuming responsibility for the media, the expanding fame of web based life, and the connection between age, sexual orientation, and the online networking. (Thompson 2011) In request to finish breaking down the impacts between internet based life exercises and the part of sexual orientation, it is useful to not just think about the quantity of the online life clients and the length of the time they spent via web-based networking media yet in addition cont rast the cutting edge web-based social networking and the past media. As referenced previously, online networking correspondence designs has been molding the belief system of crowds and furthermore been formed by the sexual orientation of clients. Numerous media specialized strategies have profound association with the part of sex in various societies. (Donald A. MacKenzie 1985) A solid examination study which is finished by Claude S. Fisher demonstrates that the phone has for since quite a while ago had some gendered types of associations, individuals generally held conviction that females talk more when contrasted with men. Hence, the majority of individuals accept the businesses of phone industry would want to pick ladies as their administrators in this industry. Likewise, the exploration concentrate additionally shows that young ladies were firmly identified with the minor and broad telephone utilization for unadulterated social purposes. The exploration further demonstrates that, the use of ladies and effect on PC improvement has really been trivi alized while there some of PCs are intended to be manly. (Fisher 1994) However, this examination study doesn't clarify for the enormous number of ladies who utilize the person to person communication destinations through these manly PCs. In our past survey for these relates research contemplates, we accept the exploration considers which assess the part of sex bunch that ruled the online networking and we likewise investigated the components behind that mastery. There is another examination concentrate when bunch which assesses the variables behind the way that Pinterest has a place with ladies and Google has a place with men. This examination study shows that around 83% of the clients of Pinterest were really ladies, and estimated 66% of Google+ clients are men.(Wagstaff 2012) This exploration study brings up an issue on whether this reality implies the female clients overwhelmed the online life and male clients have less effect on the media. (Feasts 2002) According to the consequences of the this examination study, the explanation for this amazing truth is that google+ has less female benevolent type of substance than Pinterest, and its capacities are more spotlight on scholarly utilizing reason rather than person to person communication. Consider another examination study led in the year 2006. The examination study showed that, there was a noteworthy and furthermore a contemporary type of proof, which demonstrated current feelings of trepidation on online security of the little youngsters, had recorded predecessors, for example, media apparatuses that included telephones. The examination additionally demonstrated that, as a rule, the memorable responses inevitably came about into some type of limitations for the utilization of innovation towards security of young ladies from hurt and the danger that could hurt their guiltlessness. The exploration study, be that as it may, didn't demonstrate the level into which similar media stage was utilized to shield the powerless kid youngster from impacts of dangers, hurt, predators, lawbreakers, and attack over the internet based life or some other mechanical stage. People for the most part utilize the interpersonal interaction benefits in various manners, purposes, and with various frequencies. Huge numbers of exploration examines have demonstrated that, a particular sex bunch will in general utilize the informal communities more than others with various reason. Along these lines, it is fitting to comprehend the objective clients better and put forth the improvement of attempts toward the decent variety gathering of sexual orientation clients with different purposes. As been referenced in the article The Social Media Gender Gap, been contrasted and male clients the greater part of female clients generally settle on all the more buying choices and invest longer energy in the on-line shopping. Ladies appear to be bound to inform their companions regarding their buys. (Hoffman 2008) Due to this reality the female clients is the significant gathering where the publicists could get more advantages from. A greater part of these analysts despite every thing demonstrate that albeit the two clients gathering of sexual orientation utilize online networking as often as possible, ladies still the ones that keep an eye on everything. (Hoffman 2008) A larger part of specialists demonstrate that the web is surely going to glance pink later on. This implies, the whole eventual fate of the web-based social networking and its relative exercises will be about sexual orientation based. In different words, the future online networking will be ladies situated. A portion of these specialists in the web advancement field supported the up and coming web designers to accept ladies as their primary objective if these web engineer want to get more advantages from their up and coming business. It is fascinating to see that diverse sexual orientation individuals consistently act distinctively when they are utilizing on the web administrations to do their exercises in their day by day life, which are a piece of the web based life apparatuses, for example, on-line shopping, blogging, posting and sharing pictures and so forth. As per this reality, the Website could be considered as a critical and basic type of social medium. Henceforth, an effective Website configuration is in reality about how to prevails to be fit into the decent variety social gatherings and dynamic social belief system. In spite of the fact that men were generally seen as the prior principle focus of the mechanical turn of events, ladies have turned into the gathering which remains at the bleeding edge of the online networking related exercises. Another investigation thirteen million individuals and were attempting to discover the genuine manner by which a larger part of them were utilizing the online life. As the outcomes demonstrates that individuals from both sexual orientation were members in the field of online life, it was certain that ladies have the bigger number of individuals than the male sex up until this point. Because of the equivalent, the following flood of creative thoughts that are connected to the online life is probably going to focus on a more noteworthy number of ladies than that of men (Hoffman 2008). This will enlarge the sexual orientation hole of online networking. The exploration concentrate additionally shows that young ladies are bound to be dynamic on the social destinations, for example, My Space, Twitter, Facebook, and Flixster which are critical structures to associate with and collaborate with these internet based life locales, which is more than youngsters. It is exceptionally clear that me n who are above age thirty years of age and men who are hitched for the most part don't possess energy for online networking, and a large portion of those men who are under age thirty show they are not ready to do as such after they achieve that age. Except for the LinkedIn clients who need to companion everybody on the social locales for business and employment chasing reason, these men are never ready to hang out the long range informal communication destinations. Be that as it may, rather than a similar age and wedded ladies, joining the interpersonal organizations in a steady progression. Truth be told, the quickest developing division, is distinguished as the age bunches between thirty five and fifty, particularly the clients on My Space. (Hoffman 2008) The future analysts could assess the new type of sexual orientation contrast that exist, and the reasons of why these types of distinction exist. As indicated by the Rapleaf study, it is certain that youngsters ordinarily invest a greater amount of their energy in PCs and have a lot of available time. Be that as it may, there are numerous rivalries for drawing considerations from them, particularly from the internet games like Legend and first individual activity games. It is clear that, a greater part of these men who like playing such on the web or PC games, typically will in general play other easygoing games like betting. Albeit a large portion of betting games are prohibited by these informal communities, the dominant part men would will in general look for replacement game which permit them to play and wager at same time. This is a factor that makes youngsters keep off the communication with the online networking. As opposed to a similar age gathering, ladies bunch are really a major supporters of the easygoing games, just as the internet based life systems. Another reality is that, a greater part of these young ladies really spend huge occasions when they putting forth attempts towards improving their profiles on the informal community sites㠢㠢‚⠬㠢„â ¢ pages. This investigation brings up that albeit youngsters want to member in these games, they normally will in general deny themselves to invest an excessive amount of energy in the games and feel they have the duty to going out and have public activity in the reality. These nautically self-control originate from their social philosophy which can possibly shape their way of life and practices. It is likewise important that, at whatever point these men get hitched, they connect essentially less incentive to these person to person communication destinations, while ladies despite everything keep utilizing these locales as a piece of their day by day life where they could impart their snapshot of life to other people. It very well may be closed as men really will in general view things in a more value-based way when contrasted with ladies. (Hoffman 2008) That is the reaso

The Fringe that Stole Christmas

The Fringe that Stole Christmas For the last few months, Ive gone round campus compiling hair stories from anyone willing to share them. Cheers to everyone who collaborated to make this post a reality- hair’s to you! (ha, ha) Chris Peterson 13 As you can tell from my avatar, I had hair when I started this job! It was always fine, but not thin, and very blonde and soft, often compared to a baby duck. Here I am on my first day of school some day in middle school. Most of the time, my mom would take me to Supercuts or whatever. In the summers I’d get a buzzcut to stay cool, and my baseball coach would rub my head and call me “chemo kid” because it looked like I was bald. Everyone laughed at the time…I guess the 90s were different. As I got older my hair got darker and curlier (especially because I never bothered to comb it). But it felt sort of goofy and unruly and fit with my general comportment. Here’s a picture of me from my first year at MIT, at some event being accosted by brutally geeky middle school boys on campus for a UROV competition in June of 2010. At this time, I started going to the barber in the basement of the MIT student center, who would buzz me down to a 2 or 3 and then I’d just let it grow back. A few years later, I briefly left MIT Admissions to go to grad school. I started gaining weight, which was kind of obvious, but what was less clear to me was that my hair was also thinning in the back. I didn’t notice until I went to Puerto Rico to surf on spring break after handing in a copy of my master’s thesis. The first day I was there. I sunburned through my hair so bad I got blisters. That had never happened before and there was no obvious way to fix it. I went for a consult at a hair doctor and they told me there was nothing they could do for me that wasn’t likely to be both expensive and ineffective. So I was just fat and bald and burned and it sucked. It was a time in my life when I felt like there wasn’t a lot I could control, personally and professionally, so I decided to do what I could on both health and hair. On the health front, I started eating better and exercising; on the hair front, I bought a Wahl beard trimmer and started buzzing my own head no-guard, and eventually started shaving it in the summers. It was easier to put on sunscreen, to be sure, but it also felt like me taking a decision instead of letting my hair do it for me. Here’s a photo of me at nerd camp, with one of my nerd campers, 5 years apart, one in 2011 and one in 2016. So nowadays, mostly my relationship with my hair is a relationship with its absence, which is by choice and the product of me trying to do some kind of agency. I used to miss my hair, but not so much anymore, except I never got the chance to dye it, so I had to get tattoos instead. Plus, it’s super easy to clean, because I just run my scrubby over my head and it’s fine. That’s my hair story! Abigail Bancks 22 To quote Cat from Victorious: My hair color has nothing* to do with my psychological problems! *+/- e I had a lot of things beyond my control happen in my first 6 months at MIT and had to figure out some new coping mechanisms to handle them. Turns out, bleaching and dyeing my hair is one. First was PBJ. (hair 1) The day that I moved into EC after Interphase, I had a friend dye the underside of my then-brown hair purple. That, combined with my deep and profound love for peanut butter, led to me being nicknamed after a sandwich for several weeks. Then it faded, I bleached over it, and I waited until the time was right to do something else to it. That time was about three weeks ago. Finals were Almost Upon Us and I decided that my hair needed a new look, so I pulled out my trusty Wella bleach and 30 vol developer. Two rounds of bleach later, my hair was this incredibly light, almost-white color that I could make even the most pastel colors pop on. Awesome, right? Well, almost. Remember the bleached underside? I was very careful during the first application of bleach to not touch the lightened section, but I got ahead of myself the second time and completely forgot. As I showered out the second round of bleach, my hair fell out in sad, tangled, brittle white clumps. Panic ensued as I combed out what appeared to be half of my hair. At this point I was laughing maniacally, because really, what were the odds that everything could be going so terribly at once? Ok, I thought, I still have some hair, so why not tone it? I sought out purple shampoo, but there was none to be found, so I settled on purple dye from a friend that was reputed to be a very light pastel color. Half an hour later, my hair was a very vibrant not-pastel electric purple. (hair 2) I lived like that for another week until I realized that the rapidly fading purple only emphasized how broken and sad my hair (and the entirety of my pre-finals being) was. In another fit of finals-induced anxiety, I had a friend trim the broken ends of my hair and applied an ungodly amount of Splat Midnight Indigo. Im still washing it out two weeks later, but damn, its vibrant. (hair 3) I didnt have the greatest first semester here, but I did learn that lifes way too short and unexpectedly terrible to not try weird, fun, sometimes ill-conceived ideasespecially in college, when no one will judge you for looking like a TARDIS just exploded on your head and ripped out half your hair. Im glad that I figured that out early, when I still have ~3.5 years to try more dumb things, like writing about my hair instead of studying for the final I have tomorrow morning. Michael Snively 11 Cut: #3 up the sides and back and finger length on top. Routine: Wake up, ignore hair, go to bed. Rachel Fong ’12 Rachel made a comprehensive guide to dyeing hair, and went right down to the roots (ha, ha) of the process, breaking it down to how it works, and how to do it to get the exact result you’d like in three steps: bleaching, dyeing and aftercare. Her article goes by the catchy name How to dye your hair like an Engineer. I read through and was so mesmerized by all the chemistry that goes into it that I nearly took the plunge and dyed my hair purple… Michael Yang 05 When I was an undergrad, I wanted to dye my hair dark blue, so we bleached it as much as I could tolerate waiting (which was only until my hair was a brownish-blonde) and then added the dark blue dye. It looked good for about 2 days, after which the blue with the yellow became green, and I had (unintended) green hair for a month. It looked like I had moldy hair. That was the one and only time I dyed it. Ethan Munden 20 I’ve cut my own hair on and off throughout college. I’m not super nit picky about the way it looks so if I spend money to get it cut I just go to technicuts in the students center. But cutting it myself is really nice because I have more control over the way it looks and it’s convenient because I can cut it whenever I have time. It also saves me like $20 a month which is nice. The only bad part is that cutting it by myself can be kinda tough sometimes because 1)I don’t have any formal experience so I really just wing it lol and 2)It’s hard to cut the back of my hair because I need two mirrors or else I use my phone camera and a mirror. There have been times where I just go for it though and check how it looks after and fix up whatever looks weird. But I mean I never see the back of my hair so I don’t think it matters too much. Overall though I do like cutting my own hair because it’s fun and for my basic hair style (short on the sides and long on top) it’s not too challenging And if I mess anything up I can just shave it all off! (Which I have done before lmao) Selam Gano 18 My hair type is 3B (according to the naturally curly hair quiz, which I highly recommend: https://www.naturallycurly.com/quiz). Many people have multiple hair types on their head, so Id say mine has kinda both 3B and 3C curls. My hair is medium-porosity, which is to say, it fairly easily accepts moisture and can keep it in for a couple days before I need to thoroughly condition my hair again. Low porosity hair typically has a tighter cuticle, and tends to be difficult to moisturizesome people find that conditioner only penetrates their hair strands with the aid of heat, such as shower steam, or they might use a heated conditioning cap. My hair strands are also relatively thick, and my hair is quite dark in colormany people, when you look closely, have more visibly brown hair rather than almost-black. I think this comes from the Asian side of my family lol. My routine uses almost exclusively TGIN (Thank God It’s Natural) products (though Im in China right now, and so Ive kinda just been using whatever I can find if I run out of something) Normal day: lightly wet hair throughout with spray bottle or fingers apply TGIN Green Tea Super Moist Leave-In Conditioner do some mild finger-detangling (sometimes) apply hair oil, I usually use argan oil from ogx My hair and my scalp (and my skin in general) is typically dry, so I wash my hair about every 3 days, and I shampoo maybe once a week. I also deep condition my hair Wash day: (if a shampoo day) shampoo using TGIN moisture rich sulfate-free shampoo Condition with TGIN Triple Moisture Replenishing Conditioner Thoroughly finger-detangle deep-condition with TGIN Honey Miracle Hair Mask for 3-5 minutes/rest of shower (it should probably be longer but I am lazy). I rinse out maybe half the conditioner and leave the rest of the product in. T-shirt drywhich is where I wrap my hair in a T-shirt and just let the T-shirt absorb the water for a while. Apply leave-in and hair oil if needed Extras: If you have dandruff or a particularly itchy/dry scalp, I’d look into scalp scalers and scalp oils. A scalp scaler is really just a chemical exfoliator (your scalp is just skin, after all), so I use the same one I use for my faceThe Ordinary 7% glycolic acid toner. Any AHA or BHA  (alpha- or beta-hydroxy acid) should work fine. Aesop makes a fancy rinse-out scalp oil, you could probably use rosehip oil and be fine. Tips: I always finger detangle my hair. I rarely use a comb now. I dont know where in the Culture Norms brushing your hair got linked to hygiene(?) but like, it’s just hair, for curly people especially, as long as all the knots you can feel are out, its fine. I occasionally will go through with a large-toothed comb to just really detangle everything, but I never use brushes or fine-toothed combs anymorefrizz and damage :P The important thing when drying your hair is to NEVER do that thing where you aggressively try and dry all the parts of your head by rubbing the towel all over the place (even if you have straight hair). Recipe for frizz and damage. Just wrap your hair and let the cloth absorb the water, its not the end of the world if its not completely dry (in my case that is greatly preferred actually). I typically use a T-shirt because the fibers aren’t as rough and it won’t catch on your curls, but if I’m lazy/traveling/clothes are scarce for some reason, a towel is fine too. I air-dry my hair after that, but if you want to use a blow-dryer I’d recommend using a diffuser, with low heat. This is already too long so here’s my hair (and face): And finally (shameless plug) here is an introspective blog post I wrote on Medium about hair. Me I have 4C hair- the kinky, coily type with about two hundred different curl patterns. It sometimes makes me want to curl up and dye (ha, ha). After years of suffering from heat damage and hair strands weakened by strained braids, I trimmed my hair, ditched heat treatment totally and decided to take a break from braids. Braiding is also really expensive in the greater Boston area. I wash and deep condition my hair weekly then set it in twists, hold it up with bobby pins and hope for the best. I have been known to experiment with bananas, rice water, avocados and eggs in the name of organic hair treatments. Dealing with my hair is exciting and expensive and it takes tons of patience and tender loving care, but with lots of olive oil readily available in my hall’s kitchen and Cantu hair cream, it’s way easier than I thought it would be. I’m not a fan of wigs and weaves, probably because my mother cant stand having weaves in her hair either, and I’m turning out to be a lot like her in many ways. I also challenge myself to find ways to deal with my natural hair instead of hiding it away because at the end of the day, that’s who I am- the kinky, tangled mane on my head that defies gravity growing upwards instead of downwards is a huge part of my identity, and its beautiful if nurtured well. These are two fantastic hair days I had this semester: Predictably, this post had to come to a rather split end- have a hairy Christmas and a nappy new year!

Types Of Discrimination And Stigma Around Mental Health

There are many types of discrimination and stigma around mental health. So damaging, it impacts 63% of individuals living with mental illness alone. Social stigma holds people for believing they can live a fulfilled existence in spite of diagnosis and symptoms of mental illness. The number of studies showing what it’s called â€Å"diagnostic overshadowing† that is, over attributing a patient’s symptoms of a particular condition, in many cases, it means the medical morbidity of being undiagnosed and untreated is rising. This trend presents alarming numbers, making us, the sufferers, sicker and self-conscious of our own efforts to live a â€Å"normal life†. I have experienced stigma in its many forms: social, perceived, and self-stigma. But I was†¦show more content†¦This time, though, everything felt different. As soon as we arrived at her office, a dry greeting with a touch of indifference was enough reason to ignite my anxiety. I realized she w as upset about me being late for my appointment. Confused, I corroborated to her the time of our meeting since her first statement was not truthful; I d arrived early for my appointment as usual. None of that matter, she argued emphasizing â€Å"because you’re late, I have to say sorry to my other patients for not meeting in time,† Her dark eyes followed my movements, the atmosphere felt dense and unpleasant. As a patient struggling with anxiety and depression among other disorders, being trapped in a room building trust with a professional should be able to understand my most inner thoughts and fears; if the bridge of trust doesn’t lay a strong foundation, in this case my mental, emotional and physical health, it ignites a sudden paranoia in me. It is extremely important to trust a psychiatrist and work together as a team. She became curious about the color of my hair (A very intense crimson red hair). â€Å"Mmm, do you like that color on your hair?† Yes , I love red hair. â€Å"But tell me, why red? Does it symbolize anything to you?† No, I like red, I said bluntly. She smirked while examining my clothing, my purse, my boots and my overall appearance with no shame writing God knows what on her notes. There I was wondering what the fuck her problem is. Deception Point Page 38 Free Essays

Tench stood suddenly, her lanky frame dominating the cramped space. With the cigarette dangling from her lips, she walked over to a wall safe, removed a thick manila envelope, returned to the desk, and sat back down. Gabrielle eyed the burgeoning envelope. We will write a custom essay sample on Deception Point Page 38 or any similar topic only for you Order Now Tench smiled, cradling the envelope in her lap like a poker player holding a royal flush. Her yellowed fingertips flicked at the corner, making an annoying repetitive scratch, as if savoring the anticipation. Gabrielle knew it was just her own guilty conscience, but her first fears were that the envelope contained some kind of proof of her sexual indiscretion with the senator. Ridiculous, she thought. The encounter had occurred after hours in Sexton’s locked senatorial office. Not to mention, if the White House actually had any evidence, they would have gone public with it already. They may be suspicious, Gabrielle thought, but they don’t have proof. Tench crushed out her cigarette. â€Å"Ms. Ashe, whether or not you are aware, you are caught in the middle of a battle that has been raging behind the scenes in Washington since 1996.† This opening gambit was not at all what Gabrielle expected. â€Å"I beg your pardon?† Tench lit another cigarette. Her spindly lips curled around it, and the tip glowed red. â€Å"What do you know about a bill called the Space Commercialization Promotions Act?† Gabrielle had never heard of it. She shrugged, lost. â€Å"Really?† Tench said. â€Å"That surprises me. Considering your candidate’s platform. The Space Commercialization Promotions Act was proposed back in 1996 by Senator Walker. The bill, in essence, cites the failure of NASA to do anything worthwhile since putting a man on the moon. It calls for the privatization of NASA by immediately selling off NASA assets to private aerospace companies and allowing the free-market system to explore space more efficiently, thus relieving the burden NASA now places on taxpayers.† Gabrielle had heard NASA critics suggest privatization as a solution to NASA’s woes, but she was not aware the idea had actually taken the form of an official bill. â€Å"This commercialization bill,† Tench said, â€Å"has been presented to Congress four times now. It is similar to bills that have successfully privatized government industries like uranium production. Congress has passed the space commercialization bill all four times it has seen it. Thankfully, the White House vetoed it on all occasions. Zachary Herney has had to veto it twice.† â€Å"Your point?† â€Å"My point is that this bill is one Senator Sexton will certainly support if he becomes President. I have reason to believe Sexton will have no qualms about selling off NASA assets to commercial bidders the first chance he gets. In short, your candidate would support privatization over having American tax dollars fund space exploration.† â€Å"To my knowledge, the senator has never commented publicly about his stance on any Space Commercialization Promotions Act.† â€Å"True. And yet knowing his politics, I assume you would not be surprised if he supported it.† â€Å"Free-market systems tend to breed efficiency.† â€Å"I’ll take that as a ‘yes.'† Tench stared. â€Å"Sadly, privatizing NASA is an abominable idea, and there are countless reasons why every White House administration since the bill’s inception has shot it down.† â€Å"I’ve heard the arguments against privatizing space,† Gabrielle said, â€Å"and I understand your concerns.† â€Å"Do you?† Tench leaned toward her. â€Å"Which arguments have you heard?† Gabrielle shifted uneasily. â€Å"Well, the standard academic fears mostly-the most common being that if we privatize NASA, our current pursuit of scientific space knowledge would be quickly abandoned in favor of profitable ventures.† â€Å"True. Space science would die in a heartbeat. Instead of spending money to study our universe, private space companies would strip-mine asteroids, build tourist hotels in space, offer commercial satellite launch services. Why would private companies bother studying the origins of our universe when it would cost them billions and show no financial return?† â€Å"They wouldn’t,† Gabrielle countered. â€Å"But certainly a National Endowment for Space Science could be founded to fund academic missions.† â€Å"We already have that system in place. It’s called NASA.† Gabrielle fell silent. â€Å"The abandonment of science in favor of profits is a side issue,† Tench said. â€Å"Hardly relevant compared to the utter chaos that would result by permitting the private sector to run free in space. We would have the wild west all over again. We would see pioneers staking claims on the moon and on asteroids and protecting those claims with force. I’ve heard petitions from companies who want to build neon billboards that blink advertisements in the nighttime sky. I’ve seen petitions from space hotels and tourist attractions whose proposed operations include ejecting their trash into the void of space and creating orbiting trash heaps. In fact, I just read a proposal yesterday from a company that wants to turn space into a mausoleum by launching the deceased into orbit. Can you imagine our telecommunications satellites colliding with dead bodies? Last week, I had a billionaire CEO in my office who was petitioning to launch a mission to a near-field asteroid , drag it closer to earth, and mine it for precious minerals. I actually had to remind this guy that dragging asteroids into near earth orbit posed potential risks of global catastrophe! Ms. Ashe, I can assure you, if this bill passes, the throngs of entrepreneurs rushing into space will not be rocket scientists. They will be entrepreneurs with deep pockets and shallow minds.† â€Å"Persuasive arguments,† Gabrielle said, â€Å"and I’m sure the senator would weigh those issues carefully if he ever found himself in a position to vote on the bill. Might I ask what any of this has to do with me?† Tench’s gaze narrowed over her cigarette. â€Å"A lot of people stand to make a lot of money in space, and the political lobby is mounting to remove all restrictions and open the floodgates. The veto power of the office of the President is the only remaining barrier against privatization†¦ against complete anarchy in space.† â€Å"Then I commend Zach Herney for vetoing the bill.† â€Å"My fear is that your candidate would not be so prudent if elected.† â€Å"Again, I assume the senator would carefully weigh all the issues if he were ever in a position to pass judgment on the bill.† Tench did not look entirely convinced. â€Å"Do you know how much Senator Sexton spends on media advertising?† The question came out of left field. â€Å"Those figures are public domain.† â€Å"More than three million a month.† Gabrielle shrugged. â€Å"If you say so.† The figure was close. â€Å"That’s a lot of money to spend.† â€Å"He’s got a lot of money to spend.† â€Å"Yes, he planned well. Or rather, married well.† Tench paused to blow smoke. â€Å"It’s sad about his wife, Katherine. Her death hit him hard.† A tragic sigh followed, clearly feigned. â€Å"Her death was not all that long ago, was it?† â€Å"Come to your point, or I’m leaving.† Tench let out a lung-shaking cough and reached for the burgeoning manila folder. She pulled out a small stack of stapled papers and handed them to Gabrielle. â€Å"Sexton’s financial records.† Gabrielle studied the documents in astonishment. The records went back several years. Although Gabrielle was not privy to the internal workings of Sexton’s finances, she sensed this data was authentic-banking accounts, credit card accounts, loans, stock assets, real estate assets, debts, capital gains and losses. â€Å"This is private data. Where did you get this?† How to cite Deception Point Page 38, Essay examples

A Step Into A New World free essay sample

â€Å"For it is in giving that we receive.†-St. Francis of Assisi The overwhelming feeling of God’s presence is not something that is simple to write about. It is a feeling that you must experience in your own time. It is an emotion that is so hard to describe that words seem trivial. I will try my best to depict this emotion. Guatemala was a life changing event that will never leave my heart. While being there, I truly found myself and I felt the presence of God around me as well as within me. As I stepped off the bus and into the arms of the children surrounding me I knew it then and there, God was with me and I had finally found myself. I spent ten days in Guatemala and cherished each and every one of them. Throughout the past few years, I have tried to put aside time for giving myself to others. We will write a custom essay sample on A Step Into A New World or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I have bounced around from location to location to find where I truly fit in. I found my place while I was in Guatemala. I stayed in an orphanage, and got to spend invaluable time with the children living there. Through hearing many stories of the children’s lives, I was moved to tears and, at points, started to question my ways of living. While I was there, I gave up everything that wasn’t essential. I gave up makeup, electronics, hair products, and any other sort of luxury. I lived like they did and it was the most liberating feeling in the world. While at Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos, we were given the task of creating a pig pen. At first, I thought, â€Å"This should be easy, just lay down some wire and bring in some dirt and we’ll be finished.† When we arrived at the area where the pig pen was designated to be; we saw overgrown land and a huge hill. We were told we would be uprooting the vegetation as well as leveling the entire area. After we looked at it, we felt it would be impossible. On my own faith journey, I have felt this type of doubt before. I have often felt that I have been given a task that is impossible to complete. The â€Å"pit† as we referred to it, is a symbol of my faith journey. It appeared to be an obstacle I could not overcome, but in the end I overcame it with dignity and an open heart for God’s love to fill. I feel as though this pig pen was a gift that wasn’t easy to create but was so rewarding to be able to give. I’ve always strived to be on a journey of faith, but I’ve never completely stepped foot onto the path until Guatemala. I have always prayed to God to open my heart to everyone around me and give them my love. I feel as though I ripped open my heart and shared every bit of love I had with these orphans. I saw God’s love through the eyes of each and every child. There is one the will always remain very close to my heart. His name is Ceto. He’s one of the kids I met there who had a huge heart filled with Gods love. I now have a Godchild in Guatemala who I sponsor with thirty dollars a month, but it doesn’t seem enough. I have this calling to go back there and give more of my love and I plan to return this next summer for the entire month of July. When it was time to leave, I looked out the window and I saw not just ordinary children, I saw children of God, and I knew right then and there, I was a child of God too. I felt God open up his arms and pull me close and give me a big welcoming hug that to this day has still not gone away. Overall, the most significant and tangible accomplishment I made while I was in Guatemala was putting my foot on the path towards my own faith journey and not looking back.

The Relevance of Employee Engagement Indices as a Performance Measure Dissertation

The Relevance of Employee Engagement Indices as a Performance Measure and Indicator in Institutions - Dissertation Example This dissertation seeks to establish the relevance of employee engagement indices as performance measures and indicators with practical use in organizations. It examines the effectiveness of employee engagement indexing as a common practice among institutions in measuring organizational performance. The study found that employee engagement indices bore significant relationship to certain aspects of companies’ operational performance, to degrees that vary among the scale and type of the organization. Human resources aspects of operations that are significantly related to EEI are the line manager’s actions, the degree to which employees believe management will take action based on the EEI survey, the employees’ workload, their pay, the team with which they work, and the organizational policies and practices that impact upon their working conditions. Overall, the employee engagement index is an effective tool in improving performance, provided the EEI is formulated according to firm-specific factors and conditions, and provided they are analysed consistently and refined strategically over the long term. The problem with Management of Police Corruption

The problem with Management of Police Corruption Introduction Police corruption is a problem facing many global law enforcement systems. Most countries are faced with challenges of dealing with corrupt police women and men who undermine enforcement of the law. Police corruption involves acts of misconduct aimed at obtaining personal benefits, financial gain or advancement in careers which are performed in exchange for selectively pursuing or not pursuing an arrest or investigation (Peter 74). There are many forms of police corruption and one of the most common is acceptance of bribes in order to ignore arrest or investigation of certain criminal activities. In the US, this form of corruption is seen where organized crime such as prostitution or drug activities are concerned. Another common form of police corruption especially in the US is flouting conduct and procedures to gain conviction of a suspect. This may take the form of falsifying evidence which implicates a suspect. In rare cases, police participate in criminal activities. Most law enforcement agencies do not state statistics of police corruption due to fear of loss of public support for the force in fighting crime. However, it is acknowledged that police corruption is one of the greatest obstacles to fighting of crime. It is even harder to fight organized crimes since in many cases; police officers receive payment to protect the criminals. In countries such as Mexico, fighting drug use is a serious problem since most police officers are corrupt and protect the drug lords. This paper will evaluate poli8ce corruption, the forms it takes and appropriate recommendations which should be implemented in order to end the vice and ensure equal application of the law. The discussed issues will be summarized at the end. Forms of police corruption There are various forms of police corruption which are witnessed in the police force. These will be briefly discussed below; Opportunistic thefts This is a form of police corruption where officers engage in theft whenever they encounter an opportunity which facilitates the same. This is a major challenge facing the police force since it is difficult to prove opportunistic thefts by police officers in courts of law. An example of an opportunistic theft may occur when officers recover stolen property or money but intentionally undervalue it in order to keep some for themselves. Others may arrive at accident scenes or murder scenes and steal valuables from the injured or dead. In certain cases, police officers steal money or valuables from people they arrest. Such forms of corruption are difficult to prosecute since in most cases there are few if any witnesses who witness the crime (Roleff 16-18). Protection of illegal activities Protection of illegal activities is one of the greatest challenges facing established law enforcement agencies across the world. There are many police officers who are involved in protecting perpetrators of organized crime and in many cases, such officers have high authority. This makes it difficult for junior officers to arrest and prosecute such offenders (Jerome 8). Organized crimes such as sale of drugs, prostitution, human trafficking and gambling usually thrive due to protection from police officers. Usually officers are offered cash incentives or other benefits which compromise their principles. In yet other cases, police officers are either blackmailed or threatened with harm to their families or themselves in order to guarantee their protection of illegal activities. Such forms of police corruption are also difficult to prove in a court of law since organized criminals are usually intelligent and hide their activities very efficiently. Police officers who protect them also m ake prosecuting such criminals very difficult. Corruption of authority This is a form of corruption which involves the reception of free meals, drinks and gratitude from people the police are supposed to serve. This form of corruption may or may not be originally be intended to corrupt the police officer. Sometimes the public gives officers free gifts as a means of appreciation for services rendered. However, over time, this culture leads to corruption in the police force since officers feel obliged to serve people who reward them more efficiently than those who do not (Punch 53-58). Some corrupt individuals may also use such gifts as a means of blackmailing officers to perform specific services which may not be lawful. Many police departments have outlawed the reception of gifts of any form by police officers from the people they serve. Direct criminal activities There are cases where law enforcers including policemen directly commit crimes which they are supposed to prevent. Such police officers commit crimes while disguised as civilians and this makes it difficult for other law enforcers to arrest and prosecute them. Police officers have sophisticated training beyond that possessed by ordinary civilians and they are likely to leave little evidence when committing crimes which creates a challenge of prosecuting officers who engage in crime. Some officers have also been known to lend their weapons or uniforms to criminals who may commit crimes which masquerading as police officers. Other collaborate with criminals to commit crimes especially crimes involving stealing of large sums of money such as money escort services. Police officers who commit crimes are usually sacked fro the force and prosecuted as civilians. However, as was previously mentioned, their knowledge of handling weapons and gathering evidence makes tracking and prosecuting su ch officers difficult. Sabotaging criminal cases This is a serious form of police corruption which involves directly sabotaging evidence or court processes in order to ensure that a particular suspect is found not guilty and released. Some officers tamper with evidence gathered or intentionally do not follow rules of gathering evidence in order to ensure that suspects are released on a technicality. Other do not attend court sessions when summoned in order to ensure that there is inadequate evidence against a suspect. In extreme cases, officers have been known to aid the escape of suspects from custody. All these are serious offences since they undermine the justice system and prevent guilty people from being prosecuted for crimes committed. Solutions for preventing corruption in the police force There are various recommendations which may be useful in discouraging police officers from facilitating or engaging in criminal activities. These will be discussed below; Legislation Legislation is one of the most effective deterrents to crime. Harsh fines and sentences usually deter criminals from engaging in criminal activities. This form of deterrence also applies to corrupt police officers. Heavy punishment and fines against police officers who are proved to be corrupt in court will act as deterrent to other officers who are considering engaging in criminal activities. Legislators should pass laws which encourage stiff sentences to officers who engage in corruption. Local police departments should also develop tough policies which discourage corruption against police officers. These policies should encourage the sacking of officers who are found to have engaged in corruption at any level. This will encourage officers to follow their code of conduct and observe equal application of the law to all. Effective remuneration In many countries, police officers are underpaid and they are forced to work in dangerous conditions with little or no incentives. In fact, many officers are unable to cater for the basic needs of their families on their income alone and they are forced to supplement their income with income from other activities. This is one major factor which encourages police corruption. Many officers engage in corruption due to an inability to sustain their families with the income they earn (Tim 31-37). They are forced to engage in illegal activities in order to supplement income. Effective remuneration of officers including adequate allowances will reduce their motivation to engage in corruption and it is likely to reduce cases of police corruption significantly. Sensitizing police and the public Police and the public should be sensitized on the adverse effects of corruption in the police force as a long term solution to police corruption. This is the most effective solution to the problem of police corruption. The police should be informed that corruption goes against the oath they took and that it destroys the fabric of society. They should also be aware of the consequences of being caught practicing corruption. The public should also be made aware of the harm caused to society by collaborating with corrupt police. They should understand that corruption within the police force makes society unsafe and causes an upsurge in criminal activities (Prenzler Ransley 78-83). Community policing should be encouraged and communication avenues given to the public to report corrupt police women and men. Recording contact with public Recording contact between officers and the public is very effective in reducing corruption. Many officers are unlikely to engage in corruption if they are aware that their actions are being recorded. This is an effective strategy which has worked well in the US where police cars have cameras which record contact between such officers and the public. However, it must be noted that this is not a very effective long term solution to corruption in the police force since police have devised other methods of practicing corruption away from the glare of the camera. It must also be noted that such recordings are usually effective when police officers are dealing with relatively minor offences such as traffic offenses. Summary and conclusion Police corruption has been seen to be a serious problem affecting society. Although there are few statistics on police corruption, the effects of police corruption are clear to all. Various types of police corruption have been discussed and these include opportunistic thefts, protection of illegal activities, corruption of authority, direct criminal activities and sabotaging criminal cases. These forms of corruption lead to an increase in crime and few prosecutions of criminals. Solutions to the problem of police corruption include legislation, effective remuneration, sensitizing police and the public and recording contact with public. Once these recommendations are implemented, cases of police corruption will drastically reduce.

Psychology and Personality Essay

The study of personality has a broad and varied history in psychology with an abundance of theoretical traditions. The major theories include dispositional trait perspective, psychodynamic, humanistic, biological, behaviorist, and social learning perspective. However, many researchers and psychologists do not explicitly identify themselves with a certain perspective and instead take an eclectic approach. Research in this area is empirically driven, such as dimensional models, based on multivariate statistics, such as factor analysis, or emphasizes theory development, such as that of the psychodynamic theory. There is also a substantial emphasis on the applied field of personality testing. In psychological education and training, the study of the nature of personality and its psychological development is usually reviewed as a prerequisite to courses in abnormal psychology or clinical psychology. Personality Paper Personality is connected with Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. It generally explains why there are personality differences between individuals.[ Schacter, Daniel; Gilbert, Daniel; Wegner, Daniel (2011).] Personality also refers to the pattern of thoughts, feelings, social adjustments, and behaviors consistently exhibited over time that strongly influences one’s expectations, self-perceptions, values, and attitudes. It also predicts human reactions to other people, problems, and stress.[ Winnie, J.F. & Gittinger, J.W. (1973)][ Krauskopf, C.J. & Saunders, D.R, (1994)] There is still no universal consensus on the definition of â€Å"personality† in psychology. Gordon Allport described two major ways to study personality: the nomothetic and the idiographic. Nomothetic psychology seeks general laws that can be applied to many different people, such as the principle of self-actualization or the trait of extraversion. Idiographic psychology is an attempt to understand the unique aspects of a particular individual. Perspectives of Personality Many of the ideas developed by historical and modern personality theorists stem from the basic philosophical assumptions they hold. The study of personality is not a purely empirical discipline, as it brings in elements of art, science, and philosophy to draw general conclusions. Freedom versus determinism This idea seeks to answer whether humans have control over their own behavior and understand the motives behind it or our behavior is causally determined by forces beyond our control. Behavior is categorized as being unconscious, environmental, or biological by various theories. [Engler, Barbara (2008)]. Heredity versus environment Personality is thought to be determined largely by genetics and biology, by environment and experiences, or by some combination resulting thereof. Contemporary research suggests that most personality traits are based on the joint influence of genetics and environment. One of the forerunners in this arena is C. Robert Cloninger, who pioneered the Temperament and Character model.[ Engler, Barbara (2008).] Uniqueness versus universality This is the argument discussing the extent of each human’s individuality Uniqueness or similarity in nature Universality. Gordon Allport, Abraham Maslow, and Carl Rogers were all advocates of the uniqueness of individuals. Behaviorists and cognitive theorists, in contrast, emphasize the importance of universal principles, such as reinforcement and self-efficacy.[ Engler, Barbara (2008).] Optimistic versus pessimistic Personality theories differ with regard to whether humans are integral in the changing of their own personalities. Theories that place a great deal of emphasis on learning are often more optimistic than those that do not. [Engler, Barbara (2008)]. Three Theories of Personality Development The study of personality is based on the essential insight that all people are similar in some ways, yet different in others.[ Phares, E.J.; Chaplin, W.F. (1997).] There have been many different definitions of personality proposed. However, many contemporary psychologists agree on the following definition: Personality is that pattern of characteristic thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that distinguishes one person from another and that persists over time and situations. [Phares, E.J.; Chaplin, W.F. (1997)]. Trait theories According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association, personality traits are â€Å"enduring patterns of perceiving, relating to, and thinking about the environment and oneself that are exhibited in a wide range of social and personal contexts.† Theorists generally assume that a) traits are relatively stable over time, b) traits differ among individuals, and c) traits influence behavior. They consistently are used in order to help define people as a whole. Traits are relatively constant; they do not usually change. Traits are also bipolar; they vary along a continuum between one extreme and the other (e.g. friendly vs. unfriendly).[ Feist, Jess Feist, Gregory J. (2009).] Behaviorist theories Behaviorists explain personality in terms of the effects external stimuli have on behavior. The approaches used to analyze the behavioral aspect of personality are known as behavioral theories or learning-conditioning theories. These approaches were a radical shift away from Freudian philosophy. One of the major tenets of this concentration of personality psychology is a strong emphasis on scientific thinking and experimentation. Humanistic theories Humanistic psychology emphasizes that people have free will and that this plays an active role in determining how they behave. Humanistic therapy typically relies on the client for information of the past and its effect on the present, therefore the client dictates the type of guidance the therapist may initiate. This allows for an individualized approach to therapy. Personality Tests There are two major types of personality tests, projective and objective. Projective tests assume personality is primarily unconscious and assess an individual by how he or she responds to an ambiguous stimulus, such as an ink blot. Projective tests have been in use for about 60 years and continue to be used today. Objective tests assume personality is consciously accessible and measure it by self-report questionnaires. Research on psychological assessment has generally found objective tests are more valid and reliable than projective tests. Critics have pointed to the Forer effect to suggest some of these appear to be more accurate and discriminating than they really are. Issues within Testing Issues with these tests include, false reporting because there is no way to tell if an individual is answering a question honestly or accurately. Conclusion There are many theories on how a person develops a certain type of personality. A person’s personality is what defines them in all aspects of their life. People believe that you are molded into what you are today, but theories have proven that some people lead by example and some learn by example. If anyone is curious as to what type of personality they have, there are my types of assessments available to take that can tell you.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Born on the Fourth of...

Unsure of exactly what movie to watch, I looked for an interesting title on the list, hoping that one may jump out at me and interest me. I did not want to write a paper on something I had watched previously, as I did not want to have a biased opinion and I wanted to make sure I paid attention to all the details for the paper. If I had seen the movie before, I may have skipped over it or lost focus during the film. The title Born on the Fourth of July seemed patriotic and I wondered what exactly it would be about. I decided to research a synopsis of the film and realized it was about a soldier and in turn I assumed the disorder displayed in the movie would be Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Knowing this is an abnormal†¦show more content†¦It shows the hardship of a Marine’s first time deployed, and thoroughly shows every aspect the struggle of the physical and mental rehabilitation. It showed how he began drinking and partying in Mexico as a way to cope w ith his newly developed unpleasant attitude and displeasing demeanor. When he returns to the US as an advocate against the war, it shows the difficulty the protestors endured and how difficult their mission was. When the film ends it shows how Kovic went full circle from desiring to be in the Marines and being a part of the war, to a drunken protestor dealing with his PTSD and how he turned everything around and became a straight-laced advocate against war for the Democratic Party, speaking at the Democratic National Convention (Stone Kovic, 1989). When one goes through a stressful and traumatic ordeal, some individuals develop an anxiety disorder known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. Although there are treatments available for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, its broad array of symptoms makes it a difficult condition to treat. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a mental health condition often caused by some form of traumatic event. PTSD takes a toll on both your mental health and sometimes your social and physical interactions with other individuals.
